Improv Quilting

Class notes:

  • If the measurements say “ish” then don’t worry about trimming them to size, just try to keep them within and inch or two on either side of that measurement.

Week 1

Design with color and simple shapes

  • We are working on non uniform cutting, allowing imperfections and experimentations, developing a plan and being willing to pivot if necessary. We are noticing both our disappointments and successes.

  • Work on non precise measurements - a piece of paper, a wooden ruler, your ruler used as a straight edge vs measurement device. Experiment with different types of strip piecing. Allow the pattern to not be uniform. Accept the results and think about what you might have liked or disliked about this challenge.

This challenge is designed to ease us into the improv process using shapes we are comfortable with. While each block might not be as personally fulfilling, the true power and excitement of the design will come when we combine our work.

Work on imprecise cutting and developing a design idea. Try not to overthink your work. Let it be a warmup exercise for things to come!

  • Challenge 1 - checkerboard

Finished block - does not need to be square. Aim for minimum 10”/ maximum 18”.

Using 2 colors, create a checkerboard. Pieces, pattern do not need to be uniform. Experiment with strip piecing. Lean into irregularity of pattern. Don’t overthink!

    Challenge 2 - log cabin

Finished block - 14” square (approx)

Conceive of a plan for your block using self imposed limits - color, scale, pattern, etc… work on your design but be willing to pivot. Again, use imprecise measuring.

Week 2

Getting into the improv spirit

  • We are trying to connect with our gut feelings, our artistic impulses, doodling and play.

  • For the first timed challenge, keep yourself moving, playing, don't examine your choices, just follow your instincts.

Then use that same sense of play in the next challenge. You can be more methodical but try to keep that connection to instinct, play, exploration.

Continue to be okay with mistakes and disappointments, not dwelling but moving forward. Happy Accidents!

  • Challenge 1 - timed challeng

Finished block - does not need to be square. 14ish inches

Cut a variety of shapes from 6-8 strips.... small, large, squares, rectangles, strips. Place them in bags labeled Small and Large. Set the timer for 30 minutes and draw out pieces. Pieces can be cut, made into smaller vignettes, joined happenstance...no rules except to work quickly and within 30 minutes.

Challenge 2 - small simple improv

Finished block - 4 - 7" blocks (blocks will be trimmed to 6.5")

Using 3 fabrics - blue, the small waves and a color of your choice - make 4 small improv doodles. No time limit or shape requirements. Have fun and play!

Week 3

Curves!

  • Incorporating loose, imprecise curves into our skillset. Getting comfortable creating and sewing organic shapes.

  • For the first challenge, create a strip set of curved pieces. Start simple and don't worry about being fancy. Build confidence and competence.

In the next challenge, make a larger block using quarter round pieces (or larger). Use any sewing technique or layout method, just try to incorporate 4 or more quarter rounds.

Try not to pin your curves! If you feel like you must then start with the least amount of pins and build up until you hit your sweet spot.

  • Challenge 1 - strip set

Finished strip- at least 5" wide and work towards 20" give or take.

Create gentle curves. The idea is to become super comfortable sewing curves. You can make one long strip or sew it in sections and then join.

Challenge 2 - block using quarter rounds

Finished block - 14" (do not need to trim)

Use whatever technique you would like to create a curve composition. Can be 4 quarters put together, a puzzled together mashup, an improv composition.

Week 4

Blocks!

  • Any block can be "improved". Let go of notions of perfection and allow for exploration.

  • For the first challenge, create a "wonky star" block based on the sawtooth star. Don't measure your points but instead have fun and explore!

In the next challenge, remake a block from an earlier challenge. Maybe one that challenged, frustrated, inspired or excited you?

  • Challenge 1 - wonky start

Make 1 big block, 2 medium blocks or 3 small blocks.

Be as simple or funky, just have fun creating those points!

    Challenge 2 - previous block

Revisit a previous challenge and make an additional block, try to push yourself for a different outcome!
